About the event
Join us for an engaging lecture with author Cynthia Barrett, based on her book Three Sheets to the Wind: The Nautical Origins of Everyday Expressions.
Barrett explores the seafaring origins of familiar words and phrases—revealing that “filibusters” began with sailors, the first “skyscrapers” were towering ship sails, and “turning a blind eye” traces back to Admiral Nelson’s legendary act of battlefield defiance. She will also share how her own family’s maritime history, from a World War II naval officer father to a whaling great-grandfather from Cold Spring Harbor, inspired her research and writing.
Free to attend. Please RSVP.
